Complete MT5 Copy Trading Setup Guide 2026

Setting up MT5 copy trading in 2026 is mostly a question of who runs the subscriber terminal: a platform that hosts it for you, or a Windows machine you administer with a copier attached. This guide walks through the hosted path on SignalSync step by step, explains what to check on your MT5 account first (hedging or netting, symbol names, lot steps), gives the lot-multiplier arithmetic, and lists the MT5 error codes you will meet. It replaces our 2025 guide and corrects a few things that were wrong in it (MT5 supports hedging accounts, for one).

MT5 copy trading is the automatic replication of another trader's orders onto your MetaTrader 5 account, either by a copier running in a terminal you host or by a hosted terminal that a platform runs on your behalf. Your money stays at your own broker; the copier only places, modifies and closes orders according to the provider's actions and your sizing rules.

Key takeaways

MT5 vs MT4 for copy trading: what actually differs in 2026

AspectMT4MT5Why it matters for copying
Position accountingHedging (independent tickets) on almost all accounts; US/NFA FIFO accounts exceptedHedging or netting, chosen by the broker per account type (hedging mode added in build 1325, 2016)Netting accounts cannot copy hedge/grid providers faithfully
Order modelOrder = position; partial close creates a new ticketOrders, deals and positions are separate objectsCopiers must map provider tickets to subscriber positions
ProgrammingMQL4; HTTP usually via DLLMQL5; WebRequest built inMT5 EAs need no DLL permission for networking
Vendor statusNo new broker licences since 2022; maintenance builds onlyActively developedNew broker accounts are increasingly MT5-only
Execution engine32-bit, single-threaded64-bit, multi-threadedMeasurable but small next to broker fill time
Symbol namingBroker-specific suffixesBroker-specific suffixes; symbol must be in Market WatchMapping needed in both directions

Pick MT5 if your broker offers a hedging MT5 account and you want a platform that is still developed. Stay on MT4 only if your broker or your provider requires it. On SignalSync the choice does not restrict who you can copy: an MT5 subscriber can follow an MT4 provider and vice versa (details in our MT4-to-MT5 guide).

Prerequisites

Step 1: register and connect the MT5 account

  1. Create a SignalSync account and verify the email. Nothing is charged yet.
  2. Dashboard → My Accounts → Add MT4/MT5 Account. Choose MT5, enter number, server and trading password, and pick the role: subscriber to copy, provider to be copied. Credentials are stored encrypted; the terminal needs the trading password to place orders.
  3. Pay the one-time $10 USDT connection fee. The platform deploys a portable MT5 terminal on its Windows VPS, logs in, and attaches its monitoring, which reports account statistics to your dashboard. Once the account shows as connected you can subscribe.

Step 2: choose a provider

Filter the catalogue by maximum drawdown, profit factor and trade count before looking at gain. The card shows relative metrics only (gain, drawdown, win rate, profit factor, trades, monthly return, risk level, price, subscribers, recommended deposit); after login you can open the trade history without money amounts (symbol, direction, lots, prices, times, result in pips). Use it to note the symbols traded, typical lot size, average holding time and the largest lot. Balance, equity and profit in currency are visible only to the account owner. Subscription prices are set by the provider ($35 if none is set) and there is no platform fee on top of the provider's price; the platform takes 10% of the provider's payout instead. Two honest notes: most catalogue accounts are currently the platform's own test and demo accounts running catalogue expert advisors rather than third-party traders, and the provider card does not show whether an account is demo or live — ask support if that matters to you. The catalogue only lists accounts with positive net profit, at least 10 trades and drawdown under 80%, which is a floor, not an endorsement.

Step 3: set copy parameters

SettingDefaultWhat to set
Lot multiplier1.0Size from risk: typical lot × pip value × stop from the trade history = dollar risk at 1.0; set the multiplier so that risk per trade is 1–2% of your deposit. No stops in the history: ≈ acceptable drawdown % ÷ (historical drawdown % × 1.5). The provider's balance is never shown; the card's recommended deposit is his suggested minimum for 1.0, not his balance
Maximum lot size10.0The largest position you can hold through a full stop-loss; often 0.1–0.5 on small accounts. MT4 only: on MT5 the setting exists but the default Python copier does not enforce it — limit risk with the multiplier
Copy SL/TPOnLeave on; a copied trade without a stop is your risk, not the provider's
Slippage protectionOn, 20 points (MT4 points = minimum price steps, about 2 pips on 5-digit EURUSD or $0.20 on XAUUSD); waits up to 60 s for the price to return within tolerance; skip-on-slippage offScalpers: tighter points and switch to skip. Swing and news traders: 30+ points
Auto-add symbolsOnLeave on so missing symbols are enabled in Market Watch automatically
Copy trading enabledOnThe pause switch: turn it off in account settings to stop copying without cancelling the subscription

Step 4: pay and verify

Pay the provider's monthly price plus about $2.5 in TRON network fees in USDT TRC20 (QR code or TronLink deeplink; confirmation usually takes one to two minutes). The subscription becomes active on confirmation. Watch the first two or three copied trades and compare entry price, lots and SL/TP with the provider's; if something does not copy, check the account's copier status and log or ask support.

You can rehearse all of this with virtual money: the demo portfolio copies provider signals into a $10,000 virtual balance with no payment at all. Open an account and start there if you are unsure about multipliers.

Checks on your MT5 account before the first live trade

Lot sizing: the one setting that decides your risk

Suppose the provider's trade history shows a typical 0.30 lots EURUSD with a 25-pip stop: about $75 of risk per trade at multiplier 1.0. You have $1,000 and want 1–2% per trade. The provider's balance is not shown and not needed.

MultiplierYour lots$ at risk% of $1,000
1.0 (default)0.30$757.5%
0.30.09$22.502.25% — just above the ceiling
0.27 (2% risk)0.08$202%
0.13 (1% risk)0.04$101%

Then set the maximum lot to the largest lot in the provider's trade history times your multiplier, rounded down — so if their biggest trade was 1.5 lots, cap at 0.15. On MT5 this cap is informational only (the default copier does not enforce it), so choose the multiplier as if the cap did not exist. If the history shows no stops, size from the card's maximum drawdown instead: multiplier ≈ your acceptable drawdown % ÷ (historical drawdown % × 1.5). The full method is in our position-size guide.

Latency: what to expect and how to protect against it

SignalSync's benchmark of 2025-12-10 used one MT4 subscriber EA (v2.4) copying 200 signals in 71 minutes: server processing 48 ms average (P95 88 ms, P99 103 ms), queue wait inside the terminal about 553 ms average, EA processing plus broker execution about 175 ms, and roughly 0.78 s end-to-end as the sum of those stage averages; the documentation states 200–800 ms. The benchmark is about ten months old, was run on MT4 during a burst of SL/TP modifications, and may not reflect the current MT5 copier. Treat it as the shape rather than the number: broker execution (175–300 ms in those runs) is the floor, bursts add queueing, and the terminal platform makes little difference.

Practical consequences: keep slippage protection on and consider the skip setting for fast strategies; copy providers whose average holding time is hours or days (seven of the platform's 21 provider accounts with statistics — internal data, not all publicly listed — average more than 1,000 minutes per trade); and, if you ever host a terminal yourself, put it in the same region as your broker's server.

Running your own MT5 terminal instead

The hosted terminal is the default and the only path exposed in the dashboard. If you need the terminal on your own VPS — to run your own indicators alongside the copier, or for a broker the platform cannot host — it can be arranged on request via support. Whatever copier you then run, three MT5 settings are universal: Tools → Options → Expert Advisors → Allow algorithmic trading; Allow WebRequest for listed URL with the copier's server address added (otherwise error 4014, "URL not allowed"); and the AutoTrading toolbar button green. Keep the machine from sleeping and re-attach the copier after terminal auto-updates.

If this looks like more terminal administration than you want, the hosted path removes all of it: register, add the account for $10, subscribe. The documentation covers settings, payments and troubleshooting, and the features page lists what else the hosted terminal can do, including running your own uploaded .ex5.

FAQ

Can I copy trades from an MT4 provider to my MT5 account?

Yes on SignalSync; the server translates between the two order models. MetaQuotes' own MQL5 Signals does not allow it: under its rules an MT4 terminal account subscribes only to signals from the MT4 section and an MT5 account only to the MT5 section.

Do I need a VPS for MT5 copy trading?

Only if you host the terminal yourself; then yes, because a sleeping laptop misses closes. On the hosted path the terminal runs on the platform's VPS and is included in the $10 connection fee. MQL5 Signals users typically add MetaQuotes' VPS at $15/month.

How fast are trades copied on MT5?

Expect a few hundred milliseconds end-to-end. SignalSync's 2025-12-10 benchmark (one MT4 subscriber, 200 signals) showed 48 ms on the server and about 0.78 s end-to-end as the sum of stage averages, most of it broker execution and queueing during bursts. MT5's 64-bit engine is faster than MT4's, but that difference is small next to the broker's fill time.

What is the difference between hedging and netting MT5 accounts for copy trading?

A hedging account can hold a buy and a sell on the same symbol as separate positions, like MT4. A netting account keeps one position per symbol, so a copied opposite trade reduces or reverses it. Hedge, grid and scale-in strategies only copy correctly to hedging accounts.

What lot multiplier should I use for MT5 copy trading?

The provider's balance is never shown. The card's "recommended deposit" is the minimum the provider suggests for a 1.0 multiplier — not his balance — and is omitted when blank. Size from risk instead: after login, open the provider's trade history, take the typical lot and typical stop (or typical loss in pips), compute the dollar risk per trade at multiplier 1.0 (lot × pip value × stop) and set the multiplier so that risk per trade is 1–2% of your deposit. If the history shows no stops, use the card's maximum drawdown: multiplier ≈ your acceptable drawdown % ÷ (historical drawdown % × 1.5). A $1,000 deposit against a $75-risk trade gives 0.13–0.27. Verify the result against the largest lot in the history and your broker's 0.01-lot minimum. On MT4 pair it with a maximum-lot cap; on MT5 the cap is not enforced by the default copier, so the multiplier carries the whole job. Worked numbers in the position-size guide.

Can I run my own EA on the hosted MT5 terminal while copying?

Not on the same account. Uploading your own compiled .ex5 (with an optional .set file) deploys that terminal in EA mode and replaces copying on that account; the platform's monitoring stays attached. Use a separate connected account for copying.

How do I pause copying, and what happens to open positions?

Turn off the Copy Trading toggle in the account settings; the subscription stays active and you can turn it back on. Open copied positions stay open either way — close them manually or wait for their SL/TP. Cancelling the subscription is immediate and non-refundable for the remaining month.

Can I copy several providers into one MT5 account?

Each connected account copies one provider. To follow a second provider, connect a second MT5 account (another $10 connection fee), which also keeps the two strategies' exposure separate. Running both into one account would otherwise double up when both go long the same pair.
